Google Pay Shuts Down In US As Wallet Takes Over; Is India Next?

If you’re a Google Pay user in the US, brace yourself for a significant change. Google has announced that it will discontinue the Google Pay app and redirect users to Google Wallet. Starting June 4, 2024, Google Pay will cease functioning in the US, with Wallet taking its place. However, users outside the US need not fret, as Google Pay will continue to operate in regions where it’s widely used.

Transition to Google Wallet

Google’s decision stems from the popularity of Google Wallet in the US, which sees five times more usage than Google Pay. Consolidating to a single app streamlines the user experience. US-based Google Pay users have ample time to transfer their balances to their bank accounts, with Google facilitating transfers even after the app becomes inactive.

While the move seems logical for the US market, questions arise about the potential expansion of Google Wallet to countries like India and Singapore, where Google Pay boasts millions of users.

Rumours suggest Google’s interest in introducing Wallet to these regions, potentially integrating Google Pay UPI into the Wallet ecosystem. However, such integration could present challenges, leading to speculation that Google may maintain Google Pay in these regions while introducing Wallet for other purposes, such as contactless payments and ID cards with Digilocker support.

Will Google Pay shut down in India?

The fate of Google Pay in India remains uncertain amidst these changes. While speculation looms over the potential integration of Google Pay UPI into Google Wallet, it’s unclear if Google will follow suit in shutting down Google Pay in India. Given the significant user base and infrastructure established in the region, Google may opt to maintain Google Pay’s operations in India, potentially introducing Wallet for additional functionalities.
