Tata Group, the owner of Air India, took to social media and announced a compensation of Rs 1 crore per victim’s kin.
The company’s chairman, N. Chandrasekaran, also stated that they will also cover the medical expenses of the injured. The Tata conglomerate also pledged to build up the BJ Medical’s hostel that was damaged by the Air India Dreamliner crash yesterday, which took 241 lives. The flight AI171 was bound for London Gatwick from Ahmedabad. However, the plane, after gaining an altitude of 625 feet, descended abruptly in the neighboring residential area. There was only one survivor in the crash who made it out alive largely unscathed.
Air India, under the Montreal Convention, is bound to release at least Rs 1.8 crore to the victims. The compensation is based on Special Drawing Rights (SDR), which is a unit of account used by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Currently, one SDR equals up to USD 1.33. Per the Montreal Convention, per-passenger compensation is set at SDR 128,821 or USD 171,341. Based on insurance claims and legalities, this amount is bound to change.
The Montreal Convention sets a global standard for fair compensation to the victim’s family. The regulation came into existence in 1999. India joined the convention in 2009.

Meanwhile the desi internet demands that there needs a similar convection for the Railways. “Poor man’s life is so cheap,” quipped one user, while another reminded that the big corporations are not doing charity by shelling out a crore in compensation. They are merely following international regulation to save their skin.
