WhatsApp, the popular messaging app owned by Meta, is continuing its efforts to keep the platform safe from scams and misuse. In its latest monthly report, WhatsApp revealed that it banned over 99 lakh (9.9 million) accounts in India between January 1 and January 30, 2025. These efforts are part of WhatsApp’s ongoing commitment to creating a secure space for its users. Interestingly, 13.27 lakh (1.3 million) of these accounts were flagged and banned proactively, even before any complaints were made.
The platform has strict rules in place to prevent activities like spam, fraud, and the spread of misinformation. Common reasons for account bans include sending mass or automated messages, sharing unauthorized contact lists, and misusing broadcast lists. WhatsApp also prohibits adding people to groups without their consent, as well as sending unsolicited messages. Violations of these policies can result in immediate suspension. Additionally, spreading false information, engaging in hate speech, or taking part in illegal activities will lead to permanent bans.
To avoid being banned, users must follow WhatsApp’s community guidelines and respect the platform’s rules. The report also noted that WhatsApp received 9,474 grievance reports from users in India. However, only 239 accounts were banned based on these reports. The majority of the complaints came from users appealing against bans, with 4,212 of them requesting reviews. After reviewing these cases, 111 accounts were reinstated, demonstrating WhatsApp’s focus on fairness and transparency.
So, why does WhatsApp take these actions? The bans are implemented in accordance with the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, specifically under Rule (1)(d) and Rule 3A(7). These rules require platforms like WhatsApp to take steps to maintain the integrity of communication, particularly in relation to spam, fraud, and misinformation. WhatsApp uses a combination of automated systems, user reports, and real-time feedback to detect and act on policy violations. Violations can be flagged during account registration, while messaging, or through user reports and blocks.
To protect your WhatsApp account from being banned, WhatsApp offers some best practices. First, always message only people you know and avoid sending unsolicited messages. Only contact individuals who have reached out to you or given you explicit permission. When adding people to a group, ensure you have their consent first, and respect their decision if they leave. Group admins can also use features to control messaging and prevent spam. Additionally, be mindful of forwarding messages. WhatsApp now marks forwarded messages to prevent misinformation, so only share information you know to be true.
By following these simple guidelines and respecting WhatsApp’s rules, you can ensure a safe and pleasant experience on the platform, while keeping your account secure.
