A software engineer at Meta (formerly Facebook) was fired by the organization for allegedly sharing discreet workplace information with his spouse. The former Meta staff was bound to receive a handsome bonus on the very day of his termination. The techie named Riley Berton took to LinkedIn and shared his horrible experience of getting fired on professional networking platform LinkedIn.
Riley Berton joined Mark Zuckerberg’s social media giant Meta as a full-time software engineer in March 2022. He was remotely working for the firm and has been instrumental in pioneering Meta’s Orion project. In his LinkedIn experience column, he describes his contribution to the augmented reality glass project as, “Every image you see in those glasses does not display without my code.”
Riley later switched to Meta’s RayBan stack, where he helped the project achieve ‘private computing cloud’ by ‘creation of secure, attested, encrypted tunnels between the device and the cloud.’
Despite having gigged with some of the best firms in the country, with a folio of impressive projects, Riley states in his latest LinkedIn post, “ I got fired yesterday for the first time in my life.” He dubs the context and reason for his termination as “incredibly sad and terrible and so very very silly.”
Riley revealed that on January 14th, MZ (Mark Zuckerberg) posted an important update in the internal work group known as ‘Workplace.’ In the workplace update, the Facebook CEO took a tough stance on “low performers.” The information was leaked by someone else to prominent tech magazines like Verge and other media houses like the Business Insider. The former Meta employee claimed his innocence in the act, stating, “It’s clear that leaking internal company information to the press is very against the “policy” we sign in our employment contracts with Meta and I would never leak information to the press like this (I don’t even know any reporters).”

The ex-Meta staff further remarked, “What I did do was share a portion of this post with my wife and this got me fired. The timestamp on the BI post is right about the time I sent this post to my spouse so I can’t have been the “leaker” or harmed the company in any way. If she had read the post over my shoulder or if she took a photo of the post with her cellphone, I would not be writing this. If I took my laptop to a reporter and let them take a photo of the post, I would not be writing this.”
Riley added, “I had just received an “Exceeds Expectations” rating for the prior year. Coincidentally, my termination date is the day before I was to receive a bonus for my outstanding performance. The “violation” took place on Jan 14th, the firing happened yesterday so it took a few months for it to happen.”
He further alleged, “I don’t have numbers internally but anecdotally, it seems that hundreds of my Meta colleagues are also caught up in this situation where they shared with their partners something stressful happening at work and were fired for it. I am also hearing stories of people who copy and pasted the text of this post into their own Notes apps on their own laptops and were fired for it because Apple Notes syncs to iCloud.”
