Worshippers can ask the AI Mazu for blessings, request interpretations of fortune sticks drawn at the temple, and seek answers to their personal doubts. The introduction of this digital statue marks a significant fusion of cultural tradition with cutting-edge technology in the realm of spiritual practices.

The AI-powered Mazu statue, unveiled by the Tianhou Temple in Malaysia, demonstrates the blend of technology and spirituality. In a demonstration video, the temple’s founder, Shin Kong, asked the AI Mazu about receiving an unexpected fortune, to which the digital deity calmly responded that staying at home would increase one’s chances of receiving such a fortune. The interaction showcases the AI’s ability to provide personalized advice in a tender and nurturing manner, typical of the traditional Mazu’s spiritual character.

The AI Mazu was unveiled ahead of the 1,065th birthday of the sea goddess, celebrated on April 20, 2025. Mazu, originally born as Lin Mo in 960 on Meizhou Island in China, became a legendary figure after her death while rescuing shipwreck victims, ascending to heaven, and being worshipped as a protector of mariners. Today, Mazu is revered by millions, especially across Southeast Asia, including countries like Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia, where her worship continues to thrive.
