Elon Musk has expressed support for Poornima Ramarao’s suspicions of foul play in the death of her son, Suchir Balaji. Balaji was a 26-year-old former OpenAI employee who was found dead in his San Francisco apartment on November 26. Poornima has called for an FBI investigation, claiming that a private autopsy did not confirm the cause of death stated by the police.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), she revealed that a second autopsy and private investigation were conducted to uncover the true cause of her son’s death. She wrote, “We hired private investigator and did second autopsy to throw light on cause of death. Private autopsy doesn’t confirm cause of death stated by police. Suchir’s apartment was ransacked , sign of struggle in the bathroom and looks like some one hit him in bathroom based on blood spots. It’s a cold blooded mu*d*r declared by authorities as suicide. Lobbying in SF city doesn’t stop us from getting justices. We demand FBi investigation.”

To this post on X, Musk responded, “This doesn’t seem like a suicide.”
For the unversed, Balaji grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and interned at OpenAI in 2018 while studying computer science at UC Berkeley. He later returned to work at OpenAI, contributing to the WebGPT project, which helped pave the way for ChatGPT.
In a New York Times interview, Balaji accused the company of using copyrighted data and criticized technologies like ChatGPT for harming the Internet. Having worked at OpenAI and contributed to training its AI models, Balaji expressed concerns over the ethical implications of the company’s practices. His discomfort with how OpenAI handled data led him to resign in August 2024.

Balaji’s father, Balagi Ramamurthy, stated that his son appeared happy and was not depressed during their last conversation, which took place during his birthday week. His mother added that Suchir had made plans to visit them in January and was last seen entering his apartment, where he was later found dead.
