Indian aviation regulatory body DGCA has penalized Air India with a fine of Rs 90 lakh for flying with non-qualified crew. Besides the near-one crore fine, the Tata-backed airline’s director of operations has been fined Rs 6 lakh. Additionally, the director of training has been fined Rs 3 lakh for the lapse. Show cause for the same was issued to the flight commander and postholders at the airline on July 22. Their reply failed to provide a satisfactory justification. Hence the penalty.

In its release regarding the Air India lapse, the DGCA stated that the concerned pilot of the flight has been warned to exercise caution to avoid future instances. The flagged flight that got the airline penalized was operating with a non-trainer line captain alongside a non-line-released first officer. The regulatory body registered this as a “serious scheduling incident with significant safety ramifications.” The DGCA release further remarked on “several violations and deficiencies in the airline concerning several post holders and staff, which could significantly affect safety.”
Earlier in March 2024, Air India was penalized with a fine of Rs 80 lakh over a violation of pilot rest period rules.
