Apple has been busy with several product launches, including Macs, iPads, and the iPhone 16e, but is now focusing on new innovations like AirPods with integrated cameras. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the company is “actively developing” this technology, which aims to improve how AirPods interact with their environment. While these camera-equipped AirPods won’t appear in this year’s AirPods Pro 3, they are expected in future models, signaling exciting advancements ahead.

Apple’s iPhone 16 lineup introduced a new feature called Camera Control, allowing users to take photos and adjust settings while unlocking a technology called Visual Intelligence. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is planning to integrate similar technology into future AirPods to strengthen its position in the AI space. The new AirPods would utilize external cameras and AI to analyze the environment, providing smart glasses-like features without needing the actual glasses.

This advanced technology isn’t expected to be unveiled until at least 2027, likely with the release of AirPods Pro 4. Apple is also exploring the possibility of launching smart glasses, similar to Meta’s Ray-Bans, as a way to leverage its Vision Pro visual intelligence technology. This technology can scan and interpret surroundings to offer useful information, further aligning with Apple’s AI-driven ambitions.
AirPods with a camera may sound futuristic, but Apple’s AI developments are still lagging behind. Despite discussions at WWDC 2024, Apple has been slow to update Apple Intelligence, and the much-anticipated conversational Siri might not arrive until iOS 20. According to Mark Gurman, Apple’s upcoming iOS 19 update will focus on expanding existing AI features rather than introducing groundbreaking advancements. While there may be updates to Siri, the broader AI improvements are expected to be limited, with existing features likely integrated more deeply into Apple’s ecosystem.

Gurman notes that WWDC is unlikely to showcase major AI innovations, and instead, Apple will outline plans to enhance current capabilities across apps. The exact details of this expansion are uncertain due to Apple’s non-Siri limitations. iOS 19 seems to be more of a “catch-up” year for Apple’s AI, with the release of the ‘LLM Siri’ backend delayed until iOS 19.4. Siri’s new features, initially planned for iOS 18.4, have also been postponed and may be introduced next year, possibly aligning with iOS 19.
