India’s Unified Payment Interface (UPI) has emerged as the global leader in fast digital transactions, with 18.39 billion transactions processing Rs 24.03 lakh crore in the month of June 2025.

UPI was launched by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) in 2016. The facility allows users to connect various bank accounts on a unified platform to enable digital payment with encrypted security.

UPI now accounts for 85 percent of all digital transactions in India, which is half of the global real-time payment. The payment platform connects 675 banks to its patrons, which includes 491 million individuals and 65 million merchants. The UPI empowers the users security by payments via QR or UPI ID, masking phone numbers or bank details.

India’s digital payment system is now available across the UAE, Singapore, France, Mauritius, Bhutan, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.
