Author and philanthropist Sudha Murthy, reacting to her husband Narayana Murthy’s suggestion of a 70-hour workweek, emphasized that “time never becomes a limit” for dedicated professionals. Speaking on NDTV’s ‘India Through the Eyes of Its Icons’ show, the Rajya Sabha MP reflected on her early life, noting that not just her husband but also individuals in fields like journalism and medicine often worked for 90 hours or more, highlighting the intense dedication required in such professions.

Sudha Murthy emphasized that Infosys’ success wasn’t due to a “magic wand,” but rather a combination of hard work, luck, and timing. While Narayana Murthy focused on building Infosys, Sudha managed the household, raised their children, and taught computer science. She made a conscious decision to support her husband’s dedication to the company, telling him to focus on Infosys, and chose not to complain about his absence, recognizing that he was working on something larger.

She stated, “I made that decision, and I also decided there was no point in complaining and telling your husband, ‘Oh, you are not there,’ because he’s doing a bigger job’”.
She emphasized the importance of creating her own path to stay productive and not dwell on a lack of time. She shared that she now works longer hours than her husband, with Narayana Murthy being her constant support.

Describing their mutual support as the essence of life, she highlighted the idea that “behind every successful woman, there’s an understanding man.” Murthy also stressed that everyone is given 24 hours, and how one spends that time depends on their passion and the support of their partner.
She added, “How you want to spend it is left to you. And if you want to do anything passionately, it requires time. And if you are passionate about your work, then your partner should support it.”
